winter formal
Cold-weather school dance
A winter formal is a semi-formal dance held by high schools or colleges during the winter months, typically December through February.
Less elaborate than prom but dressier than casual events, it usually involves suits and cocktail dresses rather than tuxedos and gowns: Are you going to winter formal with anyone?
The event fills the social calendar between fall homecoming and spring prom.
