winter-kill
Frost destroys the crop
Winter-kill refers to the death of plants or crops caused by harsh winter conditions—extreme cold, ice damage, or repeated freezing and thawing.
As a verb, to winter-kill is to die or be killed this way: Half the wheat crop winter-killed during the February freeze.
Farmers and gardeners use the term when assessing spring damage to perennials, lawns, or overwintered crops.
