how

In what way?

How, though it is not technically a wh- word—like when, where, why, and what—behaves like them grammatically and is a frequent and important function word.

When it is followed immediately by a verb or subject it is about the method or means that something happens: How did you get here? Uncle Ed showed me how to make jam.

When it is followed by an adjective it is about the degree or extent to which the adjective applies: You won’t believe how nasty she was to us.

How can also be used to inquire or tell about condition (How the heck are you?) or reason (How can you believe such rubbish?).
