water stone

Blade honing tool

A water stone is a sharpening stone used with water as a lubricant, common in Japanese knife-sharpening traditions.

Unlike oil stones, water stones cut faster and can be cleaned easily, though they wear down more quickly.

Woodworkers and chefs favor them for producing extremely sharp edges: I keep my water stones soaking before I sharpen my chisels.
