water runoff

Rain leaving land

Water runoff is rainwater or melted snow that flows over land rather than soaking into the ground.

It collects in streams, rivers, and storm drains, eventually reaching larger bodies of water.

Runoff from urban areas often carries pollutants—oil, fertilizers, pesticides—into waterways: Agricultural water runoff is contaminating the lake.

Also called simply runoff.
