water poisoning

Too much liquid

Water poisoning is a potentially fatal condition caused by drinking excessive amounts of water in a short period, diluting the body's sodium levels and causing cells to swell.

Also called water intoxication or hyponatremia.

It occurs in endurance athletes, hazing rituals, or water-drinking contests: A radio contest participant died of water poisoning after drinking nearly two gallons.
