water boarding
Interrogation by suffocation
Waterboarding is an interrogation technique that simulates drowning.
The subject is immobilized, face covered with cloth, while water is poured over the nose and mouth, creating the sensation of suffocation.
Though it leaves few physical marks, waterboarding is widely considered torture.
It gained notoriety when used by U.S. intelligence agencies on terrorism suspects after 2001: The Senate report detailed waterboarding sessions.
