vows of obedience
Monastic submission promises
Vows of obedience are formal promises, typically made by members of religious orders, to submit to the authority of superiors within their community.
Along with vows of poverty and chastity, obedience forms one of the three evangelical counsels in Catholic and some other Christian traditions.
The vow binds a person to follow directives from religious authorities as an act of spiritual discipline: She took vows of obedience when she entered the convent.
