voter coercion
Pressuring electoral choices
Voter coercion is pressuring someone to vote a particular way through threats, intimidation, or abuse of power.
An employer threatening job loss, a family member threatening financial cutoff, or poll watchers physically intimidating voters all constitute voter coercion.
The term also covers schemes to verify how someone voted, which enables enforcement of demands: The union boss collected photos of marked ballots—classic voter coercion.
Distinguished from voter persuasion, which uses argument rather than threats.
