volunteer militia

Armed civilian defenders

A volunteer militia is a civilian defense force whose members serve by choice rather than conscription.

Unlike standing armies, volunteer militias typically train part-time and mobilize during emergencies or wartime: The volunteer militia drilled on weekends.

Historically, such groups formed the backbone of early American defense before professional military forces.

The term sometimes applies to modern paramilitary organizations, ranging from legitimate civil defense units to armed groups operating outside government authority.
