volcanic beaches
Dark sand coastlines
Volcanic beaches are shorelines composed of material from volcanic activity—typically dark sand, black pebbles, or rough lava rock rather than the white or golden sand of coral or quartz beaches.
The distinctive black sand forms when basalt lava meets ocean water and shatters into fine particles.
Hawaii, Iceland, and the Canary Islands are known for their volcanic beaches: We spent the afternoon on a volcanic beach in Maui.
