vocal tics
Involuntary verbal sounds
Vocal tics are involuntary sounds or utterances—throat clearing, grunting, sniffing, or repeating words—that a person produces without conscious control.
They're associated with conditions like Tourette syndrome.
Unlike physical tics, which involve movement, vocal tics are auditory: His vocal tics included a soft humming sound.
