vigil candles
Memorial flame offerings
Vigil candles are small devotional candles, typically in glass containers, lit in churches or at shrines as an act of prayer or remembrance.
The flame continues burning after the person leaves, extending their prayer or vigil.
They're also called votive candles.
Outside religious contexts, vigil candles appear at memorials and protest gatherings: Mourners placed vigil candles at the site of the shooting.
