use case

When it's helpful

A use case is a specific situation or scenario in which something might be used.

In software development, it describes how a user interacts with a system to achieve a goal.

The term has spread beyond technical contexts: What's the use case for a second car? means "when would you actually need it?" A use case justifies a feature, product, or decision by showing practical application.
