urban music

Metropolitan musical genres

Urban music is a broad and somewhat contested term for popular music genres associated with Black American culture, including hip-hop, R&B, soul, and their derivatives.

The label emerged in the radio and record industries as a marketing category, though many artists and critics reject it as a euphemism that awkwardly groups diverse genres by racial association rather than musical characteristics.

The station switched to an urban music format in the 1990s.
