country and western

Honky-tonk music genre

Country and western is a genre of American popular music blending rural folk traditions with Western cowboy imagery.

The term was common from the 1940s through the 1970s before shortening to simply "country." It evokes fiddles, steel guitars, and songs about heartbreak, drinking, and working-class life: My grandfather only listened to country and western.
