unstress

Pronounce without emphasis

To unstress a syllable is to pronounce it without emphasis, the opposite of stressing it.

In linguistics and poetry, unstressed syllables receive less force than their stressed neighbors: the second syllable of banana is stressed while the first and third are unstressed.

The noun unstress refers to this lack of emphasis.
