unlocked phone
Any-network mobile device
An unlocked phone is a mobile device not restricted to a single carrier's network.
Phones sold by carriers often come locked, requiring customers to complete contract terms before the phone can be used with other providers.
An unlocked phone accepts any compatible SIM card: I bought an unlocked phone so I could switch carriers easily.
The term also applies to phones freed from restrictions after purchase.
