university departments

Campus subject areas

University departments are the organizational units within a college or university that group faculty, staff, and students by academic discipline or field of study.

Each department typically handles its own curriculum, hires its own professors, and manages degree programs in its area—the English department, the physics department, the economics department.

Departments may be housed within larger divisions called schools or colleges, such as a school of engineering containing separate departments for civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering.
