unit fraction
One over something
A unit fraction is a fraction with 1 as its numerator: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/100.
Ancient Egyptians expressed all fractions as sums of unit fractions.
In modern use, the term appears mainly in elementary mathematics education, where children learn that any fraction can be decomposed into unit fractions: 3/4 equals 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4.
