underwings

Concealed hind wings

Underwings are the undersides of a bird's or insect's wings, often differently colored than the upper surface.

Many moths in the genus *Catocala* are called underwing moths because their drab forewings conceal brightly colored hindwings—revealed suddenly when threatened: The red underwing flashed its scarlet bands.

In aircraft, underwing refers to the area beneath the wing where fuel tanks or weapons mount.
