underclocking

Deliberate processor slowing

Underclocking is deliberately running a computer processor or graphics card at speeds below its rated capacity.

This reduces power consumption and heat generation, extending battery life or allowing quieter cooling.

The opposite of overclocking, it trades performance for efficiency or stability: I underclocked my laptop to stop the fan from running constantly.
