unblinding
Ending masked conditions
Unblinding is the process of revealing which participants received which treatment in a clinical trial, typically after data collection is complete.
During trials, researchers and subjects are often "blinded"—kept unaware of who gets the experimental treatment versus placebo—to prevent bias.
Unblinding occurs when the study ends or when safety concerns require knowing what a participant received: The committee voted for early unblinding after the treatment showed clear efficacy.
