turkey pardon
Presidential poultry mercy
A turkey pardon is the annual White House ceremony in which the U.S. president spares a live turkey from slaughter before Thanksgiving.
The tradition became formalized under George H.W.
Bush in 1989, though presidents had occasionally shown mercy to gift turkeys earlier.
The pardoned bird is typically sent to a farm or sanctuary: The president granted the turkey pardon in the Rose Garden.
