A turfman is someone involved in horse racing, particularly as an owner, trainer, or devoted follower of the sport.
The turf refers to the grass track where horses race, and by extension to horse racing generally: He was a turfman of the old school, spending his mornings at the track.
The term is somewhat old-fashioned.
