turf house

Earth-walled Nordic shelter

A turf house is a traditional dwelling built with walls and often a roof made from blocks of earth with grass still attached.

Common in Iceland, Scandinavia, and other northern regions where timber was scarce, turf houses used the insulating properties of soil and living grass to retain heat.

The turf houses at Glaumbær have been preserved as a museum.
