tulip trees

Tall yellow bloomers

Tulip trees are large North American hardwoods named for their tulip-shaped flowers, which bloom yellow-green with orange markings in late spring.

The leaves are also distinctive—flat-topped with four lobes, as if someone snipped off the tip.

The wood is light-colored and easily worked, used in furniture and construction.

Also called tulip poplar or yellow poplar, though the tree is actually a magnolia, not a poplar.
