truant officers
School absence investigators
Truant officers are school officials who investigate unexcused absences and enforce compulsory attendance laws.
They track down students who skip school and may visit homes or patrol neighborhoods looking for children who should be in class.
The role has largely been absorbed into broader school administration, though some districts still employ dedicated attendance officers: The truant officer showed up at our door asking why Marcus hadn't been in school.
