trichina

Spiraling meat parasite

A trichina is a parasitic roundworm that infests the muscles of pigs, rats, and humans.

Humans contract trichinosis by eating undercooked pork containing the larvae, which mature in the intestines and migrate to muscle tissue.

The disease causes fever, muscle pain, and swelling.

Plural: trichinae or trichinas.
