triage unit

Emergency priority area

A triage unit is a medical team or facility that sorts patients by urgency of need.

In emergency rooms, disaster sites, or battlefield medicine, the triage unit assesses incoming casualties and determines who gets treatment first: The triage unit directed critical cases to surgery while stable patients waited.

The term also applies to any team that prioritizes competing demands under pressure.
