long-term care facility

Extended residential treatment

A long-term care facility is an institution that provides extended medical care and assistance with daily living for people who cannot care for themselves—typically the elderly, chronically ill, or disabled.

The term covers nursing homes, assisted living centers, and similar residential settings where stays are measured in months or years rather than days: Medicare doesn't fully cover long-term care facilities.

Often shortened to LTCF in medical and policy contexts.
