tree huggers
Nature's staunch advocates
Tree huggers are environmentalists or nature lovers, used dismissively by those who find environmental concerns excessive or sentimental.
The image is of someone literally embracing a tree to prevent its being cut down.
The term ranges from mildly teasing to genuinely contemptuous depending on context: Those tree huggers want to shut down the whole logging industry.
