trauma memory
Painful event imprint
A trauma memory is a recollection of a distressing or harmful experience, often stored and retrieved differently than ordinary memories.
Trauma memories may be fragmented, intensely vivid, or triggered involuntarily by sensory cues: The smell of smoke brought the trauma memory flooding back.
In clinical contexts, the term describes how the brain encodes overwhelming events in ways that can later cause flashbacks, nightmares, or emotional dysregulation.
