traineeships

Paid learning placements

Traineeships are positions that combine work experience with training, typically for people entering a profession or trade.

They occupy a middle ground between education and employment—the trainee works in a real setting while learning skills: She completed a traineeship at the hospital before becoming a full nurse.

The term is more common in British and Australian English than American.
