tracklaying
Putting down tracks
Tracklaying describes vehicles that move on continuous metal tracks rather than wheels—tanks, bulldozers, and certain tractors.
The tracks distribute weight over a larger surface, allowing heavy machinery to traverse soft or uneven terrain without sinking: a tracklaying tractor for wetland work.
Tracklaying also refers to the work of installing railroad tracks.
