Lawn's nutrient layer
Top-dressing is material spread over a surface without being worked in—fertilizer scattered on a lawn, compost spread over soil, or sand applied to turf.
The technique delivers nutrients or improves texture at the surface level: The golf course receives a light top-dressing of sand each spring.
