tincture of iodine
Brown wound disinfectant
Tincture of iodine is a solution of iodine dissolved in alcohol, used as an antiseptic for minor cuts and wounds.
The reddish-brown liquid stings on application and stains skin temporarily.
Once a medicine cabinet staple, it has largely been replaced by gentler antiseptics: My grandmother still swears by tincture of iodine.
