through line
Narrative's connecting spine
A through line is the central thread or unifying element that connects the parts of a narrative, performance, or argument into a coherent whole.
The term originated in acting, where it describes a character's core motivation that guides their actions across a play, but it has expanded to describe any consistent theme running through a work or series of events.
The through line of her memoir is the search for belonging.
Critics noted the documentary lacked a clear through line.
