three Rs
Elementary education trio
The three Rs are reading, writing, and arithmetic—the fundamental skills of elementary education.
The phrase dates from the 19th century, when these were considered the essential basics every child must learn.
The "three Rs" framing is a bit forced, since only reading actually starts with R, but the alliteration stuck: Schools must return to the three Rs.
