Thank God is an exclamation of relief or gratitude when something feared doesn't happen or something hoped for does: Thank God you're safe, Thank God that's over.
Despite the religious language, it functions as a secular expression—atheists say it without contradiction.
The phrase can also appear mid-sentence: The test results were, thank God, negative.
