textured ceiling
Stippled surface above
A textured ceiling has a deliberately uneven surface rather than a smooth finish.
The most common type is the popcorn ceiling, with its bumpy, cottage-cheese appearance popular in mid-twentieth-century construction.
Textured ceilings hide imperfections and reduce sound, but they're now considered dated and difficult to clean: We scraped off the textured ceiling before painting.
