terraced fields
Hillside farming levels
Terraced fields are agricultural plots carved into hillsides as a series of level steps, each supported by a retaining wall or embankment.
The technique prevents erosion on steep slopes and allows cultivation of land that would otherwise be too precipitous for farming.
Rice paddies in Southeast Asia exemplify the form: The terraced fields of Bali cascade down the mountainside.
