terra cotta warriors

Ancient clay army

Terra cotta warriors refers to the thousands of life-sized clay soldier statues buried with China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, around 210 BCE.

Discovered in 1974 near Xi'an, the army includes infantry, archers, horses, and chariots—each figure with individualized features.

The site ranks among the world's most significant archaeological finds: We visited the terra cotta warriors on our trip to China.
