tape splicing
Cutting and rejoining
Tape splicing is the technique of physically cutting and joining pieces of magnetic tape or film to edit recordings.
Before digital editing, audio and video were assembled by literally cutting tape with a razor blade and joining segments with adhesive tape.
The term persists in digital audio software, where "splice" describes cutting and rearranging audio clips: I spliced together the best takes from each session.
