table tipping

Spiritualist parlor trick

Table tipping is a séance technique where participants place their hands on a small table, which supposedly moves or tilts in response to spirit communication.

Popular in Victorian spiritualism, the table's movements were attributed to supernatural forces, though skeptics explain them as unconscious muscular movements by participants.

Also called table turning or table tilting.
