switch sides
Join the opposition
To switch sides is to change allegiance from one party, team, or position to its opponent or opposite.
The phrase applies to defectors in war, players traded between rival teams, or anyone who reverses their stance in a dispute: She switched sides and started arguing for the proposal she'd opposed.
In games and sports, teams literally switch sides of the field at intervals.
