supercools
Stays liquid, subfreezing
Supercools is the verb form of supercool, describing the process of cooling a liquid below its freezing point without it becoming solid.
This occurs when the liquid lacks nucleation sites—tiny impurities or irregularities—that would trigger crystallization.
Water, for example, can be supercooled well below 32°F and remain liquid until disturbed.
The experiment supercools the solution to demonstrate metastable states.
In slang, supercool is simply an emphatic form of cool.
