sunken living room
Depressed seating area
A sunken living room is a living area set a few steps below the adjacent floor level, creating a distinct conversation space within an open floor plan.
Popular in mid-century modern homes of the 1960s and 70s, the design defines a room without walls: They gathered in the sunken living room around the fireplace.
Also called a conversation pit.
