suck-out

Improbable river rescue

A suck-out is a poker term for a hand won against the odds, typically when a player who was statistically likely to lose catches a lucky card: I had him dominated, but he hit a suck-out on the river.

The term emphasizes the deflating feeling for the losing player—as if victory was sucked away at the last moment.
