subtexts

Unspoken underlying messages

Subtexts are underlying meanings or messages not explicitly stated.

A subtext runs beneath the surface of what's said or written—the real meaning conveyed through implication, tone, or context rather than direct statement.

In film and literature, subtext is what characters communicate without saying: The dialogue was polite, but the subtext was hostile.

In conversation, reading the subtext means grasping what someone actually means beyond their words.
